#10: Shop Talk

Real talk: high street shops blatantly ignore women over 35. In The Pool, one of my new favorite reads, Sali Hughes writes an open letter addressing the lack of stylish, desirable, and affordable options when you're not ready to go full-on Eileen Fisher:

I want more ‘eating dresses’ – flattering frocks, neat at the shoulders, sleeves and neck, but with enough fabric around the middle to invisibly accommodate a bottle of red and more than 19 calories.

Maybe you've seen this ode to clogs already, but it begs a second look, because just admit it already, clogs are awesome. My first pair of Danskos, bought for my first kitchen gig at Zon's, lasted 10+ years, until my big toe finally poked through the leather. Today I have four pairs- clogs for all seasons.

At a time when every article of clothing seems to communicate information about the wearer’s class, status and personal taste, Dansko clogs are reassuringly neutral.

Speaking of kitchen style
, let me shout out London-made Polka Pants, run by the cool babe Maxine Thompson, who's swiftly catching up to Ellen the Apron Lady's world domination. Her well-fitted trousers are (wait for it) spot on. Say goodbye to those grody elastic waistband houndstooth baggies once and for all!

When my department store wanderings lead me into a deep state of overwhelmthe Minimalist Bliss of Acne Studios brings me back to center. Plus, their trousers always have my back(side).

One thing I don't miss about Boston? The army of polo-shirted, khaki-trousered dudes and ladies commuting in their J. Crew pencil skirt/twinset combos with sneakers. No no no. No. Business casual, you're the worst.

Just more of the magnificent Stacy London is all. Oh yeah- with Leandra of Man Repeller. Double whammy.
